Amarillo is a really unique hop that can add a lot of punch to a lot of different styles of beer. It helps to create a definitive orange citrus flavour and can be used in American pale ale, IPA, and Imperial IPA recipes.
With a relatively high-alpha hop it's mainly used for aroma contributions both in dry-hopping and late kettle hopping. It's a hop that was developed by the Virgil Gamache Farms in the state of Washington.
Amarillo hops were proprietary for a while, but now they’ve been released to the public, so any homebrewer can appreciate its rich taste. And there is a lot to appreciate!
Amarillo hops feature a really interesting oil content, which includes a very high myrcene count. Myrcene is a highly volatile oil that usually gets volatilized in the boil, but if used during dry hopping, it can bring you a really strong intense citrus character and a bit of grapefruit to it.
Aroma: Grapefruit, orange, lemon, melon, apricot and peach.
Typical Alpha Acid Levels: 8.0 - 11.0 %
Typical Beer Styles: Pale Ale, IPA, NEIPA, Wheat, West Coast IPA Etc.
Substitution: Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Mosaic, El Dorado, ETC.
