Scottish distillers malt that imparts an authentic flavour for smoky malt whisky.

Crisp Scottish Heavy Peated Pot Still Malt (50 ppm) utilizes peat from Aberdeenshire. Similar to Crisp's Premium Pot Still Malt, this malt uses the same spring barley. It's slowly peated for the fullest absorption of phenols by each grain, resulting in a depth of flavour that won't fade in storage and delivers that hallmark peat character in your whisky. Heavy peated malt typically measures upwards of 50 ppm of total phenol.

Crisp's prized peated malt boasts its intense smoke character thanks to their unique wet smoking method. This method allows peat smoke to fully penetrate the barley kernel. After germination, the barley is transferred to the kiln where the peat burner is lit. For the next 24 hours, Aberdeenshire-sourced peat is burned, and the smoke is passed through the bed of moist barley. An osmotic process occurs, where the smoke enters the malt, and water leaves. Crisp's modern peat kiln burns efficiently, minimizing peat usage. Finally, the malt is kilned conventionally to drive out moisture and cure it to distilling specifications.

For the past 20 years, Crisp has been making peated malt at their Speyside maltings in Portgordon. They supply distilleries not only in Scotland but also all over the world, including prominent whisky makers in Japan, the USA, Australia, Europe, and England.
